I’m a 30-something nerd/geek (take your pick) from Florida but currently existing in Maryland. I love tormenting my husband with horror movies, sharing my passion for reading with my young daughter, and talking to others about books and movies for hours on end. (Even if they just asked ‘How was your day?’)

I truly enjoy books, movies, and shows from all genres, current and classic, but I notice of late that I’ve been gravitating to Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror. These are genres that I’ve always enjoyed and dabbled in, but now I really want to get into the thick of and see what’s out there.

Some of you might have gathered that the name “Scifantasor” is a mash-up of these genres (Plus, sounds like a cool ass dinosaur… might have to incorporate that into my art at some point), and they are what I want to focus on for this website. I haven’t abandoned other genres, but usually prefer them with a dash of the core three. Literary Fiction with a Sci-Fi twist, or maybe Historical Fiction meets Horror.

So what are my goals? Well, for one, is  that my reviews lean towards discussion rather than evaluation. Though I’m very opinionated and honest, I’m not here just to make “hot takes”. For another, while getting ARCs (Advance Reader’s Copy) are great, they aren’t my main motivation at the time. There are so many great, proven works of literature out there, that I don’t feel as compelled as I used to to chase the next great global phenomenon. 

Now, to get to know me a little more, I’ll give you some background tidbits on how I came to love each genre:

Science Fiction

I honestly don’t remember when I saw Star Trek for the first time. My dad was watching Next Generation when I was itty bitty, and Deep Space Nine/Voyager after that. Just something that was always on in the background. 

While Star Trek fueled my love for space travel and aliens, Animorphs and X-Men showed me that Sci-Fi can take on different forms and not be constrained by certain tropes. 

Fantasy 

One of the first books I remember reading was Wizard of Oz, a beautiful copy that was a gift from my Grandma. I think this is where the love for unique creatures and world building began, but it became a passion… with Labyrinth! (Also started my love for David Bowie.)

Horror 

Horror was definitely a more gradual journey of love and appreciation, with a couple of notable events along the way. I think many of us had the experience of seeing a scary movie way too young and being up half the night. Mine was the The Shining, and I was eight. I had nightmares about Jack chasing me through the hedge maze for weeks. 

For some reason this didn’t kill my love of horror and soon after I was drawn to a very popular ‘90s series, Goosebumps. What a joy for my 9 year old self when the show premiered. A couple of years ago I took a nostalgic walk down Goosebumps lane, and let me tell you, both versions of The Mask hold up. (Can’t wait till my daughter is old enough to read it!)
